Webmaster-Dennis Hermes (AKFHermes)
A big HOWDY to all you kayak fishermen (and women) from Texas and beyond! I'm your webmaster and absolutely LOVE kayak fishing here in the central and southern parts of our great state. I grew up in central Illinois. Over 20 years ago, I came to Austin for a 6 month visit while my wife was doing her internship here. Needless to say, Austin's appeal was too tempting so we decided to make it our home.
People ask me where I go for a vacation and I just laugh. I truly feel like I'm on vacation every time I'm out enjoying one of our many beautiful lakes or rivers. I guess I'm lucky enough to have known what it's like to live in the frigid great white north so I am able to appreciate what a lot of native Texans take for granted. In my formative years, I was all about MotoX racing. As the years passed (and the bones became more brittle) I became more involved in fishing. I bought my first little boat in the late eighties and spent about as much time repairing it as I did fishing. Over the following decade, several power boats came and went. Each was a little bigger, a little newer, a little faster than the previous one. As Austin grew and changed (i.e.-became more populous) I found power boat fishing to be less and less enjoyable. Launch fees, fuel, repair, storage, registration fees, were getting out of hand (IMHO). I found myself enjoying the sport less and less.
Then I saw what I didn't even know I was looking for. Out at Lake Bastrop, a guy pulled up and unloaded his new T-140 bright red kayak...and proceeded to fish out of it. I was hooked! Shortly thereafter, I waved goodbye to my beloved center console power boat and headed to Academy to buy my first yak (a Mainstream Kingfish). It was a good boat but I eventually upgraded to my current kayak (Perception Search) after owning and paddling several other types/brands. I did manage to keep an extra one (Perception Pungo) for use as a touring boat.
I hope to see you all out on the lakes and rivers, holler at me if you see me first ;-)
Mission Statement
We don't need no stinking mission statement!
In all reality, I just want to create a website that promotes kayak fishing in a positive light, hopefully have a little fun, and meet some fellow yak fishermen that share the same passion as I. Thanks for taking the time to check out my website.
Best Fishes, Dennis
